AESI provided geotechnical evaluation and design for a landslide repair on Magruder Road, one of the only roads through a wilderness area in the United States, located in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness in the Bitterroot National Forest in Idaho. AESI’s scope of work included the following:
- Review previous work including geotechnical investigation and design plans by prior consulting engineers.
- Field reconnaissance to the site in the company of USFS Engineers to review site conditions and to further conceptualize the design and required scope of work.
- Conduct geotechnical explorations including the following:
- Hollow stem auger drilling with sampling by standard penetration test (STP).
- Topographic survey of the site.
- Laboratory soils testing.
- Analysis and design of several alternative retaining wall concepts.
- Work with USFS Engineers to develop retaining wall design alternatives to stabilize and drain the site and comply with desired USFS standards for road geometry.
- Cost analysis and applicability discussion of each retaining wall alternative.
- Preparation of plans, Forest Service Supplemental Specifications, and cost estimate.
- Assist with engineering construction support as needed by the USFS.
