The United States Forest Service (USFS) identified 10 sites on forest service roads in the Nez Perce – Clearwater National Forest in northern Idaho that failed and required rehabilitation. AESI was contracted to conduct geotechnical investigations and provide preliminary designs to stabilize the failed road sites. Site visits, topographic surveys, and subsurface geotechnical explorations were undertaken in the fall and preliminary designs were completed in the spring.
In the summer, the USFS contracted with AESI to provide final design for two of the sites. AESI completed final design and construction documents (plans and specifications) later that same year. Both sites involved design of an approximately 120 foot length of geotextile reinforced wall with a concrete masonry unit block facing for UV and fire protection. Wall heights varied from 6 to 14 feet.
